Nadungamuwe Raja
The Eternal Legacy of Nadungamuwe Raja ๐๐
Nadungamuwe Raja was born in 1953 in Mysore, India, and was later gifted to a Sri Lankan Ayurvedic physician as a token of gratitude ๐ฎ๐ณ➡️๐ฑ๐ฐ. Throughout his adult life, he was under the devoted care of Dr. Harsha Dharmavijaya, his esteemed owner, who treated Raja as a member of his own family at the Nadungamuwa physician’s estate ๐ก๐จ⚕️. Raja’s primary mahout (handler), Wilson Koddithuwakku, shared a legendary bond with him, walking alongside the tusker for decades, ensuring his safety and comfort during long journeys ๐ฃ๐ณ.
For 14 glorious years, Raja held the sacred responsibility of carrying the Golden Casket of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Kandy Esala Perahera, a duty he performed with immense discipline and grace ๐ฐ๐ฏ️. Sadly, this noble giant breathed his last on March 7, 2022, at the age of 69, leaving an entire nation in mourning ๐️๐. To honor his unparalleled service to the country’s heritage, his physical form has been preserved through taxidermy, and a lifelike statue has been established, allowing future generations to witness the majesty of the king of tuskers once more ๐๐✨. He remains a timeless guardian of our sacred traditions ๐❤️.
